Defining “Green Features” into MLS data

In an effort to put strength into the use of the term “green” while describing homes listed for sale, many MLS boards are adding data fields so that buyers can know with certainty what in a listing makes it considered “green”. These new fields are providing data on a wide range of green features, from energy efficient appliances to electric carports – claiming that a house is green is “verifiable, understandable, and certifiable.”

NAR’s Green Resource Council ( estimates that as many as 50 MLS boards have added some version of green data fields. The Council will be releasing a tool kit in 2010 on the best practices for greening the MLS.
