Toys for Tots!

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.

This holiday season, there is an estimated 5,000 children in the Mid-Columbia in which the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is trying to collect toys for.  The age range of toys needed is for 10 years and younger. They try to get each child a stuffed animal, one nice gift and two less expensive gifts with totals around $70 to $80 per child.  They know times are tough, but at this point they want to get all they can get in order to provide all 5,000 children with toys.

If you are in the area and are able to donate, please drop off toys at one of the following U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots locations.

Old Cleaning Myths Debunked

Old Myth: Washing dishes by hand is more energy efficient.

The Truth: New Energy Star rating dishwashers actually use less energy, water and soap.

Old Myth:  It is great to clean windows and mirrors with crumpled newspaper.

The Truth:  This may have used to be the case; however, new paper and ink formulas may cause mudges on your mirrors and windows.  It is best to use paper towels or microfiber cloth.

Old Myth:  Hairspray is great in removing ink stains.

The Truth: When the key ingredient in hairspreay used to be alcohol, this often worked.  More recently, hairspray is made with low-alcohol or alcohol free ingredients.  When removing ink stains it is best to use undiluted rubbing alcohol or a stain removal product specifically made for ink stains.

New Richland Winery…Coming Soon!

Along Hwy 240, you may notice a large plywood building shell, partly painted blue.  This spring, that building will be transformed to Thomas O’Neil Cellars.  Construction began in August for the 3,000 square foot building that will include a tasting room, production facility, and outdoor patio and stage.

Owner, Tom O’Neil, had a passion for viticulture when his college, Michigan State University, created a certificate program for it.  He comleted his internship at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Patterson and has been working with wine ever since.

They will be concentrating on mostly red wines like cabernet, syrah, and merlot; however, they will also feature chardonnay and Riesling.  Future plans also consist of holding small concerts and events next summer.

For more information, find him on his upcoming website, www.thomasoneilcellars.com, find him on Facebook or call 737-0851

Thank You to our Veterans!!!

In an October post, we informed the community about the Tri-City Herald’s project in collecting vintage photos of veterans.  Now, the herald is reporting that they recieved over 400 bits of information and photos.  Here is a sneak peek of what was submitted:

William J. Bair’s: “After V-E Day, we were quickly shipped from Czechoslovakia to the South Pacific where hundreds of ships had assembled for the invasion of Japan. With the atomic bombs forcing Japan’s surrender, our mission changed and we went into Japan as part of the Army of Occupation.

“Having witnessed the size of the invasion force and seen some of the preparations in Japan to defend against the invasion, I am certain that, had the invasion occurred, the casualties among the Japanese would have far exceeded the 170,000 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the casualties for the invading forces also would have been astronomical.

“Ironically, after returning home and earning a Ph.D. in radiation biology at the University of Rochester School Of Medicine in 1954, I came to Hanford where much of my research was directed to understanding the health consequences of inhaling plutonium … (some of which) very likely came from the B Reactor, which produced plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb that helped save my life and hundreds of thousand others.”

Also,

Philip Vinnedge joined the Army in September 2009 and was deployed to Afghanistan on Sept. 30, 2010. He had been there 16 days when an IED took his life. He died on Oct. 13, 2010. He was 19 years old. His parents, David and Julie Vinnedge, were raised in Connell.”
Some stories have a happy ending, while others were not so lucky.  Either way it is truly amazing that our Veteran’s work to protect our country everyday.  You can see the photos and stories on the Tri-City Herald’s website, or buying picking up a copy of today’s paper!

THANK YOU VETERANS!!!!!
