PNNL creates device for monitoring for radiation along borders

image

Pacific Northwest National Labs have created a device to monitor for radiation and that device has now been installed at 850 locations along the Canadian and Mexican borders where US Custom Agents are stationed.

As vehicles drive slowly through the border, they pass a monitor that can detect radiation in small amounts, as the instruments are highly sensitive. Vehicles that register a suspicious reading will be stopped and searched for contraband.

Around 400  people work on this project in the Richland labs, and they report a satisfaction for the type of work they do to help protect our nation. The focus now for this project will be start installation of these devices at airports and seaports and is a portion of a $1 billion Department of Homeland Security program.

Working together is theme for “State of the Tri Cities”

DSC_0903

Creating an environment of cooperation among the 4 cities that encompass the Tri-Cities is the theme that local officials want to encourage, as they addressed the group that attended the 8th annual State of the Cities meeting on Wednesday, at the Tri City Regional Chamber of Commerce offices. Growth of the cities has put our area on the map, so to speak and each individual city has outlined the projects that they feel will add to the growth while benefiting it’s citizenry.

Richland has plans of widening Keene Road from Queensgate to West Richland, and adding a spray park to the Badger Mountain Community Park along Keene. They will also work in cooperation with Kennewick to reconstruct Steptoe Street and make a decision about the future location of the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center, among other projects.

Pasco, Kennewick and Richland will work in partnership on the studying the best location for the next bridge crossing the Columbia River.

Pasco officials and the Port of Pasco are looking into the development of the river shoreline east of the cable bridge, additional infrastructure as a support of future growth and industrialization, a $9 million water treatment facility, and the creation of a new overpass at Lewis Street.

Kennewick officials are looking for increased private development of the Vista Entertainment District and to the development of the Southridge area, which they expect will include 60% of the cities future growth.  The city is planning the Bridge-to-Bridge, River-to-Rail effort with the Port of Kennewick, which consists of a major overhaul of the property that lies between the blue and cable bridges.

West Richland is looking to expand the economic base and expand infrastructure between Red and Badger Mountains, and invest in tourism with regards to the wine industry as a way to add to the regional vision, and increase growth in that community.

In a time when costs to each municipality are increasing, funding from the state faces cuts, and the residents want more metropolitan projects, the officials in each city are optimistic about continued growth.  Let’s be optimistic along with them – Time will tell……..

Defining “Green Features” into MLS data

In an effort to put strength into the use of the term “green” while describing homes listed for sale, many MLS boards are adding data fields so that buyers can know with certainty what in a listing makes it considered “green”. These new fields are providing data on a wide range of green features, from energy efficient appliances to electric carports – claiming that a house is green is “verifiable, understandable, and certifiable.”

NAR’s Green Resource Council (www.greenresoucecouncil.org) estimates that as many as 50 MLS boards have added some version of green data fields. The Council will be releasing a tool kit in 2010 on the best practices for greening the MLS.

Yucca Mountain plans being quashed by Obama: Tri-City leaders filing lawsuit

yucca-mountain2

Preparations are being made by three Tri-City leaders to file a federal lawsuit stopping the Obama administration from eliminating the previously set in place plans to use Yucca Mountain, Nevada, a national repository for Hanford waste.  This is one of what is expected to be many lawsuits calling for the federal government to cease-and-desist abandonment of plans to use Yucca Mountain as a national repository for used fuel from commercial nuclear power plants and high-level radioactive waste from nuclear weapons production.

Tri-Citians Bob Ferguson, Bill Lampson and Gary Petersen had a letter delivered to the White House requesting a chance to have a dialogue regarding the issue.  Aiken County, S.C. has also filed a federal lawsuit as well because 13 states have weapons waste that by law must go to a national repository. Congress had previously designated Yucca Mountain as the national site for high-level waste, and that designation is in the law, and the administration is unilaterally changing the law.

If the plans are abandoned, Yucca would become a $10 billion hole in the ground, and it is believed that the decision is political rather than scientific . If Yucca Mountain used utilized, then Hanford waste could stay here indefinitely.

You’ll soon see property tax statements in your mailbox

mailbox

Both Benton and Franklin county residents should be seeing their property tax statements arriving in their mailboxes shortly.  Franklin County property holders will find that they are paying less taxes this year, while Benton County homeowners will be paying a little more.

Franklin County rates have decreased mostly due to new construction which has increased the tax base and in turn has dropped the tax collections.

Benton County rates have increased and is most attributed to the vote-approved special levies for schools which increased the levy rate for the second year.
